FIELD GUIDE 12 / Foundations

Your first 30 days of GEO: a realistic small-business plan

A four-week plan for reviewing your website, improving business information, and recording AI visibility responsibly.

THE USEFUL TAKEAWAY

Use the first month to establish a baseline, fix important information, and improve a few useful pages. Treat it as a foundation sprint, not a promise of AI placement.

Choose a focused outcome

The first month should make your business easier to understand and your next decisions better informed. Avoid setting “be recommended by every AI” as the project’s acceptance criterion. That outcome is outside your control and difficult to define.

Choose one audience, one important service, and a manageable set of questions. Decide who can approve business facts and who can edit the website. Keep a task list with owners and a record of published changes. If you need outside help, give a provider a concrete scope rather than an open-ended instruction to “do GEO.”

Week one: establish the baseline

Collect your public business name, website, contact details, services, coverage area, and genuine qualifications. Check your main pages and profiles for obvious contradictions. Record the problems before changing them so you can explain what was fixed.

Write five to ten realistic customer questions and observe the relevant AI experiences manually. Save the questions, settings you can identify, dates, answers, and source links. Label mentions, citations, and recommendations separately. This is a practical starting sample, not an estimate of every customer’s experience.

Week two: fix the customer-facing fundamentals

Correct important contact and service information. Make sure the primary service page explains scope, process, location or delivery model, and how to inquire. Test the contact path on a phone. Remove broken links and inaccessible pages that interrupt a real customer task.

Review the technical basics with your maintainer: ordinary page access, intentional indexing settings, redirects, canonical URLs, and the sitemap. Google’s SEO Starter Guide is a useful reference for these foundations. Do not turn the week into a long technical rewrite unless an actual problem requires it.

Week three: publish one useful contribution

Choose a recurring customer question and write a guide that helps someone make progress. Use real expertise, an original explanation or checklist, and appropriate sources. Connect it to the relevant service page through a descriptive internal link.

Review one or two legitimate external profiles that matter to your audience. Correct errors or complete missing facts where you are authorized to do so. If you identify a real opportunity for coverage or a partnership, evaluate its relevance before spending time or money. Avoid bulk citation packages that cannot explain their value.

Week four: recheck and decide

Repeat the original question set with the same documented conditions as far as practical. Compare saved observations without assuming every change came from your work. Review website inquiries, customer questions, and any identifiable referrals.

Write a short report: what changed on the website, what facts were corrected, what responses you observed, and what remains uncertain. Choose the next task from that record. You might improve another service page, clarify a confusing claim, or investigate an inaccurate external source. A decision supported by evidence is a useful result even if AI responses remain variable.

A sensible definition of done

  • Your most important public facts agree.
  • A customer can understand and inquire about the priority service.
  • A useful guide answers a distinct question.
  • Your baseline and follow-up observations are preserved.
  • Someone owns the next review.

These are deliverables you can verify. They make a stronger foundation for ongoing discovery work than a guarantee about a system you do not control. If the work uncovers a larger website or brand problem, use the findings to request a clearly scoped proposal.
